These 2 films (aside from "Caddyshack") are Rodney Dangerfield at the top of his game. What a great idea to put them both on one disc. I have both films on separate DVDs, but would gladly trade 'em in for this space-saving combo package.
Ol' Rodney may be gone, and he didn't win any Oscars for his comic performances, but one thing's for sure: he kept me laughing from start to finish!

Good Stuff:

- I type thirty or so pages a week between three different computers. The keyboard on this little guy works great for my purposes. I'm 6'3", 280 lb. and yeah, I have big hands. - Minimal bloatware. Took just a couple minutes to remove the stuff I didn't want.
- Attractive and practical design.
- It has a good display and decent sound... for a netbook.

[Edit] As far as sound goes, it depends on what you're listening to. My Baroque Classical and Russian Chant sounds great, as does anything spoken word. My Swedish Death Metal (and anything similar) sounds tinny and weak.

- While it was no use to me, it came with some basic office programs already loaded. Just one of many things Asus did to try and make this netbook ready to use straight out of the box.
- At least so far... the battery life is pretty close to what's advertised.

[Edit] I'm able to get just under eight hours of operation out of it, without turning the screen brightness all the way down or wireless/bluetooth options off.

[Edit] Swapping out the 1GB Memory stick for a 2 GB Memory stick was easy.

Bad Stuff:

- It attracts finger prints like bees to flowers. Get skins/decals/stickers for the outside cover if you're really OCD.
- Doesn't make coffee.
- Bulky. The wife has a 1002HA with a 2 cell battery and it is soo slim and strim looking compared to mine. Hers is a half pound lighter too. She still gets 4-5 hours of battery life out of hers even with the smaller battery.

Thoughts:

For the money, it's one of the best netbooks out there. I looked at almost every netbook available and read over 500 reviews before deciding on this one. I bought the 1002HA (brushed aluminized) for my wife because she didn't need the battery life and wanted something more professional looking.

[Edit] I spent the weekend passing it around to people I know and letting them type on it, and everyone (big or small) pretty much agreed that it was an easy keyboard to adjust to and comfortable. My father ordered the Blue 1000HE (from Amazon!) he liked it so much.

I recently received a copy of the newly revised version of The First Days of School, and I love it! I'm enjoying it so much that I don't want to rush through it. I read it a little at a time, savoring it like a wonderful piece of chocolate. Everything is clearly written, and much of what is written is quite profound in its simplicity. I love the sidebars with extra information and inspirational stories, as well as the internet links to additional resources. The page layout is attractive and easy to read. Many people are familiar with this book as a "must have" for beginning teachers, but as a 27-year veteran, I can say that this book is just as powerful today as it was when I first read it years ago. There is much wisdom tucked inside its pages!

A young boy's quest for education, February 21, 2006

Going to school with Dad on My Back is a sheer delight. Unlike recent imported Chinese films that feature kung fu or action fights (Jet Li comes to mind), this gem tells the story of a young boy's life in a poor village in rural China.
Unable to afford to send both his children to school (because in China, school is not free), a widowed father spins a water urn and the handle points to his 7 year old son Shiwa instead of his older sister.He wins the opportunity for education merely by a game of chance. Shiwa then goes off to school and his sister stays behind, toiling in the fields.
Shiwa is reluntant to go to school at first, after witnessing the drowning of a classmate while crossing a river, but his father presses him on.Years go by and he excells.He wins the national chemistry competition when he is in middle school, and is accepted to the university. By this time, his father grows ill and he must make a decision on whether to go off to school or stay and care for his father, since his sister has married and lives in another village.
What strikes me about the film, besides its visual beauty, is the warm,caring relationship that Shiwa has with his older sister. In American films, the brothers and sisters often are shown as rivals, insulting each other, and being disrepectful to each other and their parents. In foreign films, the relationships are portrayed in a more mature fashion, as in the case of this film.
Although is older sister wasn't lucky in the spin of the urn and thus could not continue going to school, she supports and really loves her little brother and tries to help him succeed in any way possible. She even gets married by arrangement to a richer family so that her father has money to pay the tution of her little brother. He loves her in return, and mentions her in his speech after winning the chemistry award to the village.
I also was moved by the families in the village who live in poverty, but try desperately to give their children an education, by scraping enough money together to pay the teachers to teach their children in hope of a better life. In the USA, we have free universal education, and so many parents and children do not take advantage of it. In fact, the lowest income children in our schools do the worst academically in many districts, whereas children of poor immigrants from Asia leap at the chance in this country to better educate themselves and to move out of poverty. This film shows just how much education means to not just the peasant farmer of Shiwa, but in fact the whole village, who come together to celebrate his educational achievements.
This film is based on a true story which makes the whole viewing experience that more meaningful.

I had to get a bag w/ enough support and room for many books...(nursing program). It's held up pretty well so far w/ no problems and I have to drag this thing thru street n rocks, conrete, & brick. Its only been a month but its held up great and I get alot of compliments in it being so different and cool lookin.

I decided to buy this backpack because my dog literally ate my other one. I was in a great hurry to buy another backpack of high quality, so I knew that I needed a Jansport. I bought the Super Break backpack in Orchid Corduroy. In case there is another person interested in this color, I really like it; it is what I wanted. Imagine the color of lilacs. The backpack has only a large compartment and a smaller one for your pens, etc.

Now to describe the backpack: The main compartment seems to be big enough for an average sized college textbook, a small book, a planner, a small 3-ring binder, a notebook, and a few loose papers. Right now I am taking a summer class, so I have few books to carry. In the fall, however, I will probably carry an average of six books each day to class. The good news is that with all of these items to carry for my summer class, there is still a large amount of room left. I would estimate that this backpack could carry about 3 average sized textbooks, a few smaller books, and a planner (with creative stacking). I also carry my lunch in my backpack, and a water; these fit in the pack well.

I gave this backpack a four because of the smaller compartment. As I look at the backpack, the small compartment could carry several loose items. The "organizer" only consists of a larger pouch, say for a scientific calculator and a floppy disc, and only two pen or pencil holders. As a college student, I must carry several miscellaneous items from pens to index cards. I feel that for people in the same situation, this backpack may not meet the above mentioned need. I feel that I could use more compartments for organization.

The backpack is medium sized overall; it is not so small that a student couldn't make it, but it isn't large enough to accomodate copious amounts of books or other school supplies. Overall, the comfort of this backpack is, on a range of 1-5, a five. The straps on this pack are padded very nicely. I am currently carrying around 15 pounds of books; not even close to what I usually carry, but so far, so good. It also features adjustable straps with more of a range than I am used to. As a small person, this was a great bonus. If you use both straps, this pack should not shift around too much. However, I only use one in order to get the backpack off and be seated quickly. Also, the backpack unzips without any trouble whatsoever (don't you hate it when the zipper gets stuck in the fabric?).

I hope that I addressed any concerns about this backpack. I would recommend this backpack for college students who do not have to carry MORE than four or five average sized textbooks, for people who are going on a small trip (two outfits, one pair of shoes, toiletries, entertainment, and snacks), and perhaps even for sporting purposes.

I've had this bag for about three months now and pretty much adore it. I take it back and forth with me to work, it's a good size to hold snacks, purse, couple packets of paper, and the front pockets work well for my cell phone and chargers. I even keep my keys in the side pockets.

A few things I'd change, though. It's completely open, so I'm glad I don't travel by foot or bus or somewhere crowded where someone could just reach in and pull things out. And the one side of the handle likes to twist the bracket holding it to the bag, I'm afraid the metal is going to bend at some point and open so that I'd have to find a new bracket. Oddly, just the one side does that.

I had an earlier version of this bag made with leather and condura and it was great.
This one is even better. It is much tougher and much more durable.
There are plenty of pockets and the pading for the laptop is great.

Back to School Movie

Back to School is a 1986 comedy film starring Rodney Dangerfield, Keith Gordon, Sally Kellerman, Burt Young, William Zabka, Sam Kinison, and Robert Downey, Jr.

The plot centers on a wealthy but uneducated father (Dangerfield) who goes to college to show solidarity with his discouraged son (Gordon) and learns that he cannot buy an education or happiness.

Author Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., has a cameo as himself, as does the band Oingo Boingo, whose frontman, Danny Elfman, composed the score for the film.

The University of Wisconsin–Madison was used as a backdrop for the movie, although it was called "Grand Lakes University." The diving scenes were filmed at the since-demolished Industry Hills Aquatic Center (see Industry Hills Aquatic Club) in the City of Industry, California.

Plot

Thornton Melon (played by Dangerfield) is a truly successful rags-to-riches story. The son of an Italian immigrant tailor, he is shown as a boy in his father's shop one day, bearing his report card, which has less than stellar grades. When he tells his father his ambition is to work in the shop with him, his father tells him that "if a man's got no education, he's got nothing," and that he can do whatever he sets his mind to do.

Thornton is shown opening his first "Tall and Fat" clothing store and eventually becoming a corporate giant, complete with a TV commercial in wihch he asks: "When you go jogging, do you leave potholes?" He also has changed his last name to "Melon" (from the original "Meloni").

After his son Jason (played by Gordon) cancels plans for a visit, Thornton goes home to his second wife Vanessa (played by Adrienne Barbeau). Thornton is a widower and Vanessa is a money-hungry, aspiring socialite, unable to bear her crude husband. He threatens to expose her adulterous affairs after she threatens to sue him for divorce. "You're impossible," she says. "And you're easy," he replies.

Thornton tells his chauffeur and bodyguard Lou (played by Young) to drive him to Jason's college. Jason works as a towel boy for the Grand Lakes diving team, not making the cut during tryouts, and is treated badly by his rival Chas Osborn (played by Zabka). Thornton learns that Jason is unhappy, with only his best friend Derek (played by Downey) there for support. Jason intends to drop out, so Thornton offers to go to college with his son if he'll stay.

Possessing neither a high school diploma nor any transcripts or SAT scores, Thornton’s efforts seem to be stalled. But when the university's "Dean" Martin (played by Ned Beatty) -- a play on Dean Martin -- asks how he can possibly admit an unqualified student, the next scene cuts to a groundbreaking at the new Thornton Melon School of Business on the university grounds.

Thornton has bribed his way into an admission, which earns him the wrath of Dr. Philip Barbay (Paxton Whitehead), dean of the business school. Thornton also strikes up a romance with Dr. Diane Turner (Kellerman), an attractive professor dating Dr. Barbay, who becomes further enraged when he learns of Thornton’s interest in her.

At the same time, Jason begins to attract the interest of Valerie Desmond (Terry Farrell), the same girl Chas had been trying to impress. Jason's popularity begins to increase as his father’s generosity spreads to the students, and he earns a spot on the diving team as well after Thornton—once a spectacular diver himself—points him out to the coach (M. Emmet Walsh).

As a student, Thornton prefers partying to studying. He hires a team of professionals to complete his assignments for him, including author Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., whose essay on one of his own books surprisingly gets him a failing grade from Dr. Turner. Thornton’s fraud is exposed by Dr. Barbay, who challenges him before Dean Martin to pass an oral examination from all of his professors. If Thornton fails any part of it, he will be expelled.

With limited time to prepare, Thornton crams for exams with help from Jason, Derek, Lou and Diane. When the big day comes, Barbay begins begins by telling Thornton that he has only one question ... but in 27 parts. Thornton passes, nevertheless, after Dr. Turner inspires him with Dylan Thomas' poem "Do Not Go Gently Into That Good Night."

At the championship swim meet, a little distraction from Derek fouls up the opposing team’s dives. Chas gives a lackluster dive, followed by a near-perfect performance from Jason. Chas fakes a cramp out of spite in an effort to make the team lose, but he is replaced by Thornton, who performs an “impossible” dive, the legendary “Triple Lindy,” to win the meet.

Thornton learns that he has passed all his classes with a D, except from Diane, who has given him an A. The movie closes with Thornton lecturing the graduating class that the real world is hard, so: "Move back in with your parents ... let them worry about it."
